Coinbase to Launch Futures for Index Mixing Tech Giants and Crypto ETFs

Coinbase is set to roll out a new futures product that blends exposure to top tech stocks with BlackRock’s Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. The move signals the exchange’s push to merge traditional equities with digital assets on its derivatives platform.

  • Coinbase launching Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures on Sept. 22
  • Index includes Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, Tesla, Coinbase stock, plus BlackRock’s BTC and ETH ETFs
  • Each of the 10 components equally weighted at 10%
  • First time Coinbase expands beyond single-asset derivatives into equity index futures
  • Launch follows declining spot trading volumes and revenue in Q2
  • Part of broader strategy to connect traditional finance with crypto trading

Coinbase announced on Tuesday that it will launch a new index futures product called Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures, giving traders balanced exposure to leading tech stocks alongside BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

The index, set to begin trading on September 22, features 10 equally weighted components, each representing 10% of the portfolio. Alongside the BTC and ETH ETFs, it includes Coinbase’s own stock and major tech leaders Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla.

According to Coinbase, this marks the first time its U.S. derivatives platform is expanding beyond single-asset offerings. The company sees the index as a way to diversify trading opportunities, combining traditional equity exposure with digital assets in a single futures product.

The move comes after Coinbase reported declining spot trading volumes and revenues in Q2. To address this, the exchange has been pursuing new initiatives, including exploring prediction markets and integrating a DEX that enables access to assets not previously available on its platform.

More broadly, the new futures contract reflects an industry-wide trend of bridging traditional finance with crypto. By offering products tied to publicly listed companies alongside tokenized digital assets, Coinbase aims to attract both traditional investors and crypto traders seeking hybrid exposure.

Final Thought

Coinbase’s Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures could mark a pivotal step in merging Wall Street and Web3. By packaging big tech stocks with Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, the exchange is creating a product that appeals to both traditional investors and crypto-native traders.
